Danger Damsels Present Nerd-lesque Show Preview

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Danger Damsels Burlesque presents The Nerd-lesque Show at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Billy’s Lounge, 1437 Wealthy St. SE, in the Eastown neighborhood of Grand Rapids. The latest in a string of well-received and sold-out variety burlesque shows performed by the local troupe, The Nerd-lesque Show is being billed as an evening of “nerds and geeks, dweebs and freaks,” and challenges audiences to “channel your inner ‘nerd-dom’ for an evening of all things unapologetically dweebish.”

“This show is a comedic representation of what you might consider nerd or geek culture,” said Cassie Truskowski, the troupe’s founding director. “From TV to movies to video games, each girl has her own interpretation of classic characters or moments. We’re all nerds at heart, so to be able to portray some of our favorite characters or childhood memories is extremely fun and silly, and fits in nicely with our mission of providing audiences with classic burlesque and variety acts infused with humor, creativity, passion and stunning visuals.”

Acts slated for inclusion in the show include those based on Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The X-Files, Game of Thrones, Batman, Wayne’s World, The Legend of Zelda, Pac-Man, Mario Bros., The Last Unicorn, Red Sonia, Borderlands, steampunk, classic movie monsters and more.Truskowski said that audiences should come prepared “to laugh, to cry, to re-discover and fall in love with some of their favorite characters, to be teleported into an array of universes and taken out of their everyday, normal lives to experience something real, something you can’t get outside of live performance art.”

Truskowski described the troupe as “a throwback to classic burlesque, like Vaudeville shows. We do group song-and-dance numbers. We’re more of a feel-good style of show.”

The two-hour performance will be followed by a meet-and-greet with the performers, who will be available to sign merchandise purchased at the show, along with a DJ and dancing. The show features audience interaction, prizes and giveaways and a VIP section featuring front-and-center seating, gift bags and no-wait admission.

“This is not your run-of-the-mill burlesque troupe,” said Steve Ralph, the company’s host/emcee since May 2014. “The girls are all consummate professionals, passionate performers who work hard at their craft to present acts that are both flawlessly executed and uniquely entertaining. Our shows are rife with humor, passion, pathos, excitement, tender moments and thundering climaxes. Everything you could ask for and more from classic burlesque with a contemporary edgy-ness.”

Truskowski said the troupe’s audiences typically mix men and women, singles and couples of all ages. “A lot of our audience is made up of women, because we’re a group that celebrates diversity. We are women of all different shapes and sizes. Each girl represents each act in her own unique way, and a lot of women — and men, for that matter — really appreciate the eclectic mix of performers and our diversified approach to the art.”

A limited number of advance tickets will be available for $15 general-admission seats and $30 VIP seats. A link to online ticket sales will be posted on the show’s Facebook event page at facebook.com/events/539997339472853/.  Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. Must be 21 years of age or older for admittance.
